Facebook has recently received backlash for how it manages its user's data and private information. The impacts this could have on the safety and security of users have led to an investigation.
The decision to investigate Facebook was made by the New York State Attorney general Letitia James and by representatives in other states. Letitia James said ‘‘Even the largest social media platform in the world must follow the law and respect consumers’’. She is referring to the multiple accusations towards Facebook about leaking the personal information of numerous users.
Facebook’s vice president addressed this issue by saying that if this social media platform stopped making improvements and innovations it would lose customers because of considerable competition with other social media such as Pinterest, LinkedIn, Weibo, Reddit, and so on. Officials from the US specifically Iowa, Colorado, Florida, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee are taking action to investigate Facebook because it could be a danger to people worldwide.
The Attorney-general is determined to use every investigative tool in their reach to see ‘‘whether Facebook's actions may have endangered consumer data’. Facebook is already in an antitrust investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission. The last thing Facebook has said recently is that they are not a monopoly and users can decide how to connect with their friends across the Internet.
